Ragnarok Giveaway on FUNimation's Forums (and more)

FUNimation is doing a Ragnarok giveaway promotional on the FUNimation Forums for those interested. The prizes include a copy of Ragnarok: The Animation – Complete Series DVD and Ragnarok Nintendo DS game.

Also, as I'm sure most of you know, I'm a admin over on FUNimation's forums. FUNimation has decided to finally lift some of the restrictions that had been placed on the forums years ago and they are going to do some other positive things as well. It should be an interesting time over there and for those curious, FUNimation is paying more attention to the forums. So I encourage those of you who aren't members to register and participate on the forums. ^_^

  1. It's definitely a good thin to see them giving the Forums more attention. I think it's a great way for them to get feedback, if they just actually take notice of it more often. :P

  2. My understanding is that Sophie will be primary information provider with OFR as backup. For now, FUNimation is taking the forum very seriously after quite a bit of neglect. I too am glad to see them giving the forums more attention. ^_^

  3. You have any idea when it'll be back up btw?

    Tonight or tomorrow I hope.

  5. AstroNerdBoy, you always seem to have your ear to the ground about all things FUNimation. Have you heard any details about what they're going to censor in Dance in the Vampire Bund and why? I've heard it has some loli eroticism and I'm definitely not a fan of that; but I oppose censorship on principle, so this move is a big disappointment for me. I think companies should never censor original works. If they think it's inappropriate or are afraid of getting sued, they shouldn't license the work, plain and simple. I'm very disappointed in this, because apparently they're going to censor not just the streaming but the DVDs too.

Apologies about tacking this onto an old article, this was the first FUNimation related post I could find.

  6. They've not said any specifics. I'm told that there's a scene in episode 2 where the cream applied to protect the loli vampire from the sun is removed (erotic scene apparently). I'm also told that any time she's nude, they've spent money to add a glowing effect to hide the nudity.

That said, while I've no interest in Vampire Bund and I don't care for ecchi stuff, I also think this whole thing is a mistake on FUNimation's part. Broadcasts or streaming stuff I could understand. However, DVD sales should never be edited in my opinion. Sure, FUNimation can do it with permission from the copyright owners but I think it is a mistake.

Well, that's the result of the progressive movement for ya -- attempting to control people's lives and protect the populace from evil, whether sugar, fast food, smoking, or an anime title that may or may not be good, but has stuff that is not good for the public. So, FUNimation appears to be caving to that progressive pressure.

  7. Funi seems to think that they can pull whatever crap they want now that they're the only big player left. I can't believe this Big Brother bullshit. Yo Funi, I WILL DECIDE WHAT'S APPROPRIATE FOR ME, not you! No way Jose am I going to buy this series if it's going to be edited to placate a few nutty soccer moms. If they're going to cave in to ignorant fools instead of taking care of their customers, I'm going to cancel all my Funi pre-orders and I hope many people will do the same to teach them a lesson. The only way to stop bullshit like this is if people will vote with their wallets.

  8. Astro, you should take a stand on this. FUNimation respects your blog, so if you made a post condemning this move, hopefully it'd have more weight than just random people ranting somewhere. It's not too late to get them to reverse the DVD decision. Dammit, I really though better of them. Another joke in this is that their official statement implies they only noticed those scenes were there after they had already licensed Dance in the Vampire Bund. How the hell does no one at the company watch even two episodes of something they're going to license?

Personally I'm down with the goverment protecting me from people smoking in public places where I either have to inhale it against my will or not go there, which isn't really an option. As long as private smoking is OK, that shouldn't be a problem for anyone. I don't mind people killing themselves, but I draw the line at them killing me in the process.

In this case, there is no health risk in anyone seeing these images, even if they don't like them. For FUNimation to call them "inappropriate for U.S. viewing" is painting with a very broad brush without any grounds to do so. There's much worse shit out there, all perfectly legal. The appropriate way to handle this would be to place content warnings on the product, not alter the product. If they want to be greedy and sell something that wasn't meant for all audiences to all audiences, it serves them right to face a boycott. As for who they're cow-towing to, I doubt it's the Progressives. The Religious Right tends to be the flag-bearer in most cases involving "decency".

You have my full support if you're going to write something to challenge this nonsense.

Amen to this. Finally someone intelligent and ballsy enough to get to the root cause. I was googling for reactions to this move and all I could find was people ranting about how evil FUNimation is for exercising caution. They have to, or they'll become the next target of overzealous public prosecutors and activist judges operating under the new progressive guidelines of the current administration in a concerted effort to turn us into an intrusive nanny state. Land of the Free, my ass -- if this keeps up.

Looking forward to reading your article, because this absolutely needs to be put in broader context.
