OK, I seriously need some sleep and the small window I had where I could have watched an anime episode instead went to watching the new Doctor Who episode Day of the Moon.
Well, I can take the opportunity to say that now that I have all seven volumes of the 2nd edition printing of
Nausicaä by Viz. Man, did that take forever or what? (About two months.) When Disney's reps first hit me up in February to review the anime for the Blu-ray release, I decided then that I really would like to read the original manga that Miyazaki-sensei wrote and drew. After all, every other anime adaptation of a manga that I've seen has been a director and production team taking what a manga-ka did and either making up something loosely based on the original (
Love Hina,
Hayate the Combat Butler) or something more faithfully following the manga source (
Hayate the Combat Butler 2,
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood).
This time, I'd be watching the manga-ka convert his story into a movie. As such, what would he cut? What would he change? How do the two stories work once I know both and can compare and contrast?
So, I put in an order for the manga series, only to discover it was out of print. Volumes 2, 3, and 7 are very hard to get and some places are selling them for over $1000! I had to scour the world but eventually I found those three volumes and had them shipped in from England, Australia, and Taiwan. This followed many false starts where online stores or sellers had not updated their website and in one case, the seller lied about shipping it to me then waited a few days to ask, "Have you received this yet?" When I said, "No," I suddenly had my money back with a remark saying, "Post office must have lost this. Here's your money back. Please give us a good review." *lol* Well, no money lost so all's well that ends well.
As to the franchise, I think I'll start by rewatching the anime movie (its very good so why not?) and writing a story review (as compared to the
DVD review I did in February). Then, I plan to do a volume by volume story review of the manga. Just thumbing through the manga, I'm amazed that Miyazaki-sensei was able to cut so much out of his story to make a movie. It looks like the anime covers materials in the first two volumes and a bit of the final volume. I'm looking forward to reading this. ^_^
I strongly recommend the manga. It's much better than the anime, which is a fairly truncated and changed version.

ReplyDeleteAbout Nausicaa - if you miss any volume, you can read it in mangafox.com - it should be full there, although I don't know for sure. I'll be waiting for the reviews, since I liked the movie but probably I won't read the manga (there are so many good manga and anime out there and so little time. And my life doesn't consist of only manga and anime).

Looked. *lol* The Japanese use of SHIFT-JIS makes for better ASCII art though.
As to the "Nausicaa" manga, I have it all now and these are nice, large graphic novels rather than the smaller manga volumes normally used. I wonder if the original Japanese volumes were large as well. I'll have to look because the frames would be rather small for a normal tankoubon.
